UBS Financial Services was fined US$125 million by the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network over anti-money-laundering control failures, the Financial Times reported. The action concerned the US wealth-management business and oversight of foreign-exchange activity exceeding US$10 billion.

The penalty is a reminder that sophisticated institutions remain exposed when customer-risk decisions, monitoring systems and escalation processes do not operate as one control environment. Manual workarounds can also create gaps where transaction volumes and client structures are complex.

According to the report, UBS said it had upgraded its AML programme and regarded the matter as resolved. Enforcement findings should be read from the regulator’s final order alongside the institution’s response.
